Twitter Analysis: Oscar nominations 2022, the most commented on Twitter
The nominations for the 2022 Oscars are finally here.
On February 8, the films nominated for the coveted film awards given by the Academy were announced, which will compete in the next Oscars delivered on March 27. In addition to the usual television channels, it was possible to follow the nominations live from the social profiles of the award. There are many comments on Twitter about the nominations, and as many reactions to them.
In order to carry out our Social Observatory activity, we propose an analysis regarding the comments we have collected on the issue on social Twitter.
The analysis focuses from the proclamations of February 8 to the rest of the same week, in which mixed reactions were triggered.
We analyzed 200 tweets, all in close proximity to the announced nominations. The hashtags used are varied but we particularly took into account #OscarNoms #Oscar #Oscar2022.
Many users, private and verified, commented on the nominations for the Oscars 2022, our analysis revealed a total of 12072 likes, 949 retweets and 777 comments. Among the profiles verified by the social Twitter emerged users such as: Tancredi Palmeri, Lucia Borgonzoni, footballer Luca Tremolada, presenter Barbara D’Urso and journalist Anna Trieste.
Not only users but many pages of radio, journalism, cinema and gossip have been at the forefront in publishing comments and posts about these nominations including: Rtl102.5, Adnkronos, MarvelNewsIT and DisneyStudioIT.
As a result of the analysis we carried out, talking about data, we found that the sentiment in this regard, is positive at 34.5%, neutral at 58% and negative at 7.5%. The diversified sentiment depends precisely on the sides that Twitter users have manifested. In fact, the most contrasting opinions, we have identified them regarding the lack of nomination of Lady Gaga who should have competed for the film House of Gucci. Right here Twitter users were divided into those who claimed that she should have been nominated in the list, and those who claimed that the same was not up to the other films in the race.
No doubts, instead, about the nomination as Best Foreign Language Film of “È stata la mano di Dio” that aroused strong positivity among Twitter users, especially Italians.
These have shown immense joy and recognition towards the film and the work done by Paolo Sorrentino, who has participated in an important number of tweets showing the strong Italian support and pride towards the director.
Remaining in Italy, also the nomination as Best Animated Film of the Pixar film Luca shot in Genoa, has aroused a very strong support from the Italian Twitter community.
A significant number of tweets, as many with positive sentiment, were published in support of actor Andrew Garfield, nominated for the 2022 Oscars for his performance in “tick, tick…BOOM”, the comments, published for the most part by teenagers, show affection, support and congratulations towards the young actor. As much positivity we detected towards Kristen Stewart, young actress nominated for the Best Actress in a Leading Role category, and as much towards the beloved film Dune.
Much criticized and talked about was the possibility, announced by the Academy Awards, to nominate, during the next celebration of the Oscars, the audience’s favorite film directly through the Twitter platform. In fact, users using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite and #OscarsCheerMoment will be able to vote for their favorite movie, or single scene, and the result will be published and highlighted during the official ceremony. The film with the most votes will receive an award during the ceremony.
In this regard, opinions have been very mixed, those who argue that this is an excellent initiative to involve all the fans who follow the event with great trepidation, and those who argue that the lack of controllability of social media, subject to abuse, could lead to resolve everything into a populism that would end up debasing the elegance, traditionality and cinematic importance of this great and long-awaited event.
The Social Observatory of HDM aims to draw attention to the importance of the information that can be obtained from social networks and, therefore, to the potential of web monitoring. Studying the sentiment and the vast amount of data present on social networks and on the web, allows companies to improve their communication and positioning with respect to their competitors.
